UGH! This must be one of the most difficult things to fast from. Complaining, gossip, foul language. They all seem to come so much easier than gracious speech.
Why? There are several verses in scripture that admonish us to choose our words carefully:
James 1:26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain.
2 Corinthians 12:20 For I fear than when I come I may find you not such as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish; that there may be rivalry, jealousy, fury, selfishness, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.
Proverbs 11:9 With his mouth the impious man would ruin his neighbor, but through their knowledge the just make their escape.
What to expect? Matthew 7:12 sums it up: Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. When we use gracious speech, not gossiping about others, and refrain from constant complaining, we begin to radiate the light of Christ to others and they will want to follow. And isn't that what we are called to do?
